De band opende voor Deep Purple begin 1970. Deep Purple gitarist Ritchie Blackmore was aan het jammen tijdens de soundcheck van de band, toen Wishbone gitarist Andy Powell zich aansloot en begon te jammen met Blackmore. Na de show raadde Blackmore MCA Records aan om de band te tekenen. Deep Purple producer Derek Lawrence produceerde dit album, at elementen van blues , jazz , progressieve rock en psychedelische improvisatie bevat . De eerste kant bevat drie uptempo nummers samen met de ballad "Errors Of My Way" die, ongebruikelijk voor een rocknummer, in 12/8 maat werd geschreven. Kant twee bevat twee lange nummers met lange instrumentale passages, waarvan de tweede, "Phoenix", een live favoriet werd die vaak langer dan 17 minuten duurde, bijvoorbeeld op hun Live From Memphis EP en het Live Dates album.
